Facts About Laurel

• born in Glendale, California in 1949
• grew up in Danville, California (the East Bay Area of San Francisco)
   lives in Victoria, British Columbia
• graduated from The Bishop’s School, La Jolla, California in 1967

• graduated cum laude from the University of California at Davis in 1971, with a BA in English
• received an MA in Comparative Literature from the University of Chicago in 1972
• completed a Ph.D. in English at the University of California at Davis in 1982
• taught developmental writing at San Diego State University from 1975-1984
• served as director of OASIS, the learning center of the University of California at San Diego from 1984-1990
• went to San Diego City College, first as the Dean of Student Development, then later as a professor of English with a specialty in research writing and critical thinking
• Retired in 2014 as a professor of Humanities at San Diego City College
• began writing for publication in 1999, with a book on Kenya for Lucent Books
• is the author of 17 YA (Young Adult) books, primarily on countries and Judaica
• received a Christopher Medal for Until Our Last Breath (St. Martin’s, 2008)
• received the 2009 Theodor S. Geisel Award for Book of the Year, from the San Diego Book Awards, for The Four Seasons
• Received the 2012 Theodore S. Geisel Award for Book of the Year from the San Diego Book Awards for FINDING EMILIE

Published The Mapmaker’s Daughter (Sourcebooks) in 2014

Works as a cruise lecturer for Seabourn, Viking, and other luxury cruise lines
