Opening and closing keynote addresses. Opening keynote: \"Writing Scared\": “I tell my students that writing will never be easy—not for them or me. The only thing that changes is that you gain confidence you can succeed at it.” Even after nineteen published books and two more on the way, for Laurel Corona the first stages of contemplating a new book are still the scariest part of being an author. In her keynote address, she discusses the fear that sets in long before writer’s block is even a possibility, and describes the triumphs and tribulations in the writing life. Closing keynote: “Tell the Truth but Tell It Slant”: The Writer as Photoshopper: Recent falsified memoirs such as A Million Little Pieces and The Angel at the Fence have served to highlight the dilemmas faced by authors striving to serve both the truth and the need to write a compelling narrative. What are writers’ ethical obligations to the people and subjects they write about? Are there rules or guidelines applicable across the board, or is every case and every genre a little different? Laurel Corona discusses the difficult calls she has had to make in writing about real people and real history in both her novels and her narrative non-fiction, and guides the audience through some thought-provoking hypothetical scenarios.

October 3, 2009 10:00 am to 6:00 pm

San Diego International Book Fair
Saville Theatre, San Diego City College
14th and C Streets, San Diego

Lectures and signings by featured authors, including Laurel Corona, who will appear in the Saville Theatre at 4 PM. “When Michael Bart approached me in 2003 to see if I would be interested in writing a book based on his research into his parents’ wartime experience in Nazi-occupied Lithuania and the renowned Jewish resistance movement of which they had been a part, I almost said no. In the end, what settled it for me was the chance to address several common misperceptions: first that the typical Jew was a passive, uncomprehending victim, and second, that rescuers were almost always non-Jews.” Until Our Last Breath explores the many ways Jews fought back, focusing in particular on the armed resistance movement known as the Vilna Partisans. Holocaust scholars and book reviewers have acclaimed Corona’s writing, one calling Until Our Last Breath “carefully nuanced and beautifully written, and another, "a narrative of great but controlled power." Better known as a novelist (The Four Seasons), Laurel Corona shows her range with this work of narrative non-fiction, winner of a 2009 San Diego Book Award and a 2009 Christopher medal, given to books whose writers "craft words and images into a clear, cohesive vision." She will discuss her work as an author, with readings from Until Our Last Breath and other works.
